This is an aerial foto taken in 1936 of the River Road Neighborhood. The entire area was covered by small orchards and truck farms. This foto predates suburbia in this area. Many of today's streets already exist in 1936 but many not yet. Islands in the Willamette River are very different now. At this time, River Road was the main road to Portland. There was a gravel quarry at the end of Hillcrest. The old road is still visible where it ends at the rapids, just past mile marker 1 on the bike path. The filbert grove at the end of McClure was not planted untill the mid 40's. Infill still happening, paving over what's left of River Road's agrarian past. But an increasing number of residents are turning grass, even concrete, back into garden. You can see fotos of places in River Road reversing the pavement trend - explore the drop down menus above such as "on site features", "home" and "fotos."
