The Nearby Neighborhood
Google image above shows part of River Road Neighborhood in Eugene, Oregon. The outlines show properties that are part of the Nearby Neighbors Network. There are more members to the network that don't fit onto this image. Yellow rectangle is Jan's place. See further below for a larger view of the neighborhood plus important features.
The fotos below were taken during a bike tour summer of 2013. All these properties are within several blocks, the closest being next door and another 5 houses down the street. Other sites are several blocks away. Its a great enjoyment to see what people are doing with their homes and properties. Its not only about food. Nearby homes and properties are seeing many creative uses. My next door neighbor is an urban bee keeper. Home is his base of operation. Down the street, John and Debbie are Methodist ministers who are great advocates of local food and living more green within the local faith community. Heiko is a walking botanical encyclopedia. His front yard food forest is the site of many workshops and tours. Jason and Dharmalaya have their fences down and use their properties for a variety of educational programs for teaching permaculture, yoga and social uplift.
Andrew has a half acre garden and 12 shares to his suburban CSA. Al's place, a close ally to Dharmalaya, has become a sort of neighborhood back yard and meeting place. We have many gatherings there. Liz and Aaron have a small property and are full on into their second year of transformation. Mark, a full acre, driveway is gone. He has many projects related to food storage and production. Sandra, great results from 8 years working at her place. And there are more people making big changes to where they live nearby. 13 years ago, there were no "peramculture transformation projects." Now there are at least a couple dozen in the neighborhood. Its a good start. A long way to go.
