Democracy this page under construction
Perhaps the greatest damage inflicted on people and planet by neo liberal market capitalism is its remarkable success in degrading society's capacity to imagine and act in its own best interests for creating healthy alternatives.
A real democracy could be a big help.
We don't have it but urgently need it.
I see market capitalism and its socially engineered consumer culture as the common denominator of practically every social, political, economic, environmental problem we have. From junk food, to social/political/economic disequity to climate change. Both political parties are the servants of the economic system.
There are many thousands of organizations all over the country [world] that exist to address near countless issues and problems caused by market capitalism and the consumer culture. These groups are on the same team with the same adversary, whether they know it or not.
If there is any hope to create a livable future, given the trends and conditions, real democracy is a must. Real democracy offers the potential [very ambitious] to trade the current system for one that is friendly to people and planet.
To move from what we have now to real democracy would take an unprecedented effort. We either do it or wish we had. We all know democracy is as much of a fantasy as the myths of market capitalism.
The call to action, as included in presentation #7 might look something like this.
1] Each organization takes a good look at how their particular focus is a problem caused by the corruption of the economic system and what it has done to the political system.
2] Each organizations explain to their constituents how the current political/economic status quo is ultimately the problem. [along with lots of other ones]
3] Each organization explain to their constituencies that real democracy can be a powerful tool to address virtually all kinds of social, political, economic and environmental issues
4] The organizations explain to their members and supporters, how and why, boycotting selected products, services, corporation can help this organization accomplish its goals.
5] Organizations explain to their members and supporters, why reducing personal eco footprints is the need to downsize lifestyles, to reduce eco footprints.
The episode explores the question - what if millions of people and thousands of progressive organizations synchronized their ideals and actions to advocate for real deomocracy and modeled to the wider world, the lifestyles and personal accountability that support sustainability and democracy.
