Hi,
Covid 19 received a lot of attention in 2021 but it wasnt the only news. We all continue to create our own stories and play roles in each others' stories. Sometimes invited, sometimes not! Weaving in and out and back again.
2021 was largely a stay at home year. The longest trips were to Salem, hardly 60 miles away to see Scott, Molly and for the first time, Hattie. Victor and Susan visited and Conxita joined us for a hike up the McKenzie to the Blue Pool. A few days later, Teresa, Than, Victor, Susan and I had an awesome day at the coast. Nancy and Terry were here from SF and we rode bikes to nearby Brownsville. They went on to Astoria and then down the coast almost to Fort Bragg. On bikes. With some luck, I will make up for staying so close to home with 3 months in Europe for 2022.
Life at my permaculture paradise continues. Cannot believe I have lived here for over 21 years. Transforming this property remains one of the highlights of my life. The best investment I have ever made in many many ways. I have had contact with different members of younger generations. I love the performance art of the seasons. There is almost always something fresh from the garden or edible landscape. I have plans for another olive tree to pollinate the one I already have. The lemon tree is larger than ever and loaded, lemons just beginning to ripen,,, and lots of flower buds. Two freezers are packed with output from the property. Almost all my fruit and veggies are home grown.
My radio program takes a good bit of time. That's been happening for over 2 years now. I actually meet people now and then who tell me they've enjoyed hearing my program on the radio. It also streams from KEPW. Two other regional stations also carry it and I now a I have episodes in an on line location where still other stations can find it and maybe add it to their schedule. My program has been downloaded by radio stations in Idaho, New Mexico, California, Georgia and Illinois. These are mostly low power stations, non commercial, with largely local content. I continue with efforts to put my content out to a wider audience. Its all about creating a preferred future. Here's a link to my media page - podcasts, links to youtube stuff, video site tour of my property.
Social life has contracted some here in Eugene like everywhere. For a couple weeks, our statewide mask mandate was lifted,, but then came Delta. Teresa, Than and Sarah, another friend, go to U of Oregon women's basketball games. We have to show proof of vax and ID to see the games.
A late night activity has become watching Italian news. We are about 8 hours behind Italy. If you can see the news from Italy, you can probably see the news from everywhere else in the world. I catch more and more of the words and content. Great practice. Great brain exercise. I really really want to spend 3 months in Europe in 2022. To visit cities pushing back on cars but also to ride my bike, check out urban public spaces like the Promenade des Anglais in Nice and stay for 4 or 6 weeks in town on the northwest coast of Sardegna, named Alghero. I really feel drawn to this place. So much history - nuraghic culture, phonecians, carthage, romans, visigoths,,,, on and on and many people there dont even speak Italian with other locals. Some people speak a dialect very similar to Catalan, from the Barcelona area bcuz 400 years ago, a group of migrants arrived from that area. Medeival walls, lungo mare, car free centro, lots bikes in the fotos I have seen. I love the Mediterranean and I would love to make acquaintance with Alghero. I have been in other parts of Sardegna but not Alghero.
I love to keep up with friends. My high school class had its 51st reunion. I did not go but I did reconnected with some classmates on the phone, e mail and zoom. Nice to update a bit. Where does the time go?
I also greatly appreciate friends and neighbors close to home who add greatly to my quality of life. Food club, Adams Peanut Butter, chestnuts, car share, kiwi fruit, spontaneous chats out and about. And friends not so close to home who stay in touch! Our neighborhood association is a vital asset to our neighborhood. We've been on zoom since early in the pandemic. I love the greenway and bike path into town. A lot of thought and work went into that car free, scenic access to town, long before I even thought about moving to Eugene. I hope we can all leave where we are a better place than when we found it.
My best hope for 2022 is a great leap forward in human consciousness.
I would love to see friends making their own gallery of highlights or review of the year.
