Preparedness Subcommittees for Neighborhood Associations
Hi and thank you for your interest.
Recently I became aware that many neighborhood associations in Portland have subcommittees for emergency preparedness. That means the CERT [Community Emergency Response Team] trainees on those committees have a platform for preparedness education outreach to the community they don't have on their own. Neighborhood associations have a standing in the community that confers on its activities a legitimacy and elevated status it would not have on its own.
The writer of this text is a CERT grad and has no platform to advocate from like CERT grads in Portland.
We don't have those subcommittees in Eugene and we should. The River Road Community Organization [RRCO] Board has agreed to explore how we can contact CERT and Map Your Neighborhood folks and form a subcommittee of RRCO so information about preparedness programs and strategies can more effectively go out to the community.
If you are a CERT, Map Your Neighborhood or Neighborhood Watch person and want to know more, or simply want to know more about preparedness please contact me.
Here is a link to a neighborhood in Portland that describes its preparedness sub committee. An important aspect of making a subcommittee is having the administrative information about who has taken the trainings so coordination with the city CERT or NET programs is essential.
