CCAT
Campus Center for Appropriate Technology, Humboldt State University, Arcata, California.
CCAT is a remarkable work in progress. Begun 25 years ago, it is/was way ahead of the curve. Student and faculty visionaries have converted a throwaway frame house and over the years upgraded/updated a wide variety of approaches to reducing the ecological footprint of this student residence house.
There are solar designs, rain water storage, solar electric, energy conservation, permaculture, greywater, composting, bio diesel in the making, bamboo, solar cooking, and much more. Students living in the house, located on campus, manage and maintain the site with help from non resident student volunteers. There are ongoing workshops, tours and a "sustainablility" reference library. The site is a resource for the community and beyond with inquiries coming from all over the country and world.
Students and faculty advisors at University of Oregon along with supporters from the community are currently in the early stages of creating a similar project, CASL, in Eugene.
