Make the most of Global Trends - Local Choices Presentation
Hosting GTLC can be a great experience for those who attend and even people who don't. There's much more opportunity, in addition to a very compelling presentation.
Think strategically and holistically.
1] The challenges we face for a peaceful and healthy world are many and diverse.
2] Those many diverse challenges have just a few common denominators. Addressing those common denominators can mitigate many challenges and problems, all at the same time.
3] Many organizations are, in fact allies – addressing various parts of those related challenges. They could become more effective by knowing each other and working together.
Hosting benefits.
1] Hosting can lead to new and dynamic partnerships with other organizations in your town.
2] In some towns, there may not be a relocalize, permaculture or voluntary simplicity group but there could be existing interest that just hasn't come out of the wood work, yet. A few well organized individuals can put on an event that can attract a lot of people, perhaps enough to start an action group. Cohesion happens!
3] Hosting can create a platform for positive and creative follow up events. [see below]
4] GTLC can expand the civic dialogue in your town and perhaps catalyze forward movement on imporant issues such as land use, local food, resource conservation, localeconomics
Need some help starting a neighborhood association?
Consider co - hosting the film with kindred organizations --
1] peace, economic and social justice groups
2] climate change, peak oil, transitioning and re localizing.
3] the environment – air, water, forests, habitat
4] Communities of faith can also be great partners to work with, many have social concerns committees with a green lean and have facilities where community events can take place .
5] Neighborhood Associations – NAs are natural allies for greening the community. Most are eager to collaborate with other community groups.
Together, co hosts of GTLC can promote the showing far more effectively by way of
1] coordinated newsletters, websites, e mail lists, community calendars
2] local media, contacts to – Radio - interview; print – article; TV interview, related features
3] One group might have useful ideas and connections that could benefit the combined effort like media contacts
In fact, publicity for hosting GTLC can have a great benefit, even besides the actual event. Many people who can't make it or have little interest anyway, can still benefit by hearing or reading about GTLC and the issues the movie touches on. In Eugene, for example, the local mainstream paper will frequently print a guest view point - 800 words - relating to an upcoming event of public interest. This is a powerful opportunity. Local news and public interest radio love to interview visiting speakers. This is a powerful opportunity. Make use of opportunities.
At the showing, hosting and invited groups can set up informational tables - a mini Eco Fair. Consider opening doors a half hour before the film for a mix'n mingle and to browse displays.
Before the film, hosting groups might say a few welcoming words and a bit about what they do and how people can be involved.
Those new or strengthened relationships can be useful for working together beyond co hosting GTLC.
Follow Up Events
After hosting GTLC, there will be an increased interest and motivation by people wanting to know more or to do something. Keep building momentum, prepare for both. Plan some follow up events. With advanced prep, they can be promoted along with the film showing – two for one. Here are some ideas.
1] Arrangements can be made with Jan for a follow up half day work shop that expands on many topics in the hour long presentation. Punch here for more info to find out how to make arrangements with Jan. A follow up workshop could include multiple speakers or become small conference. Be creative! Be expansive! Punch here for a menu of what Jan can speak more about.
2] Plan a potluck or soiree'. Bring people together, mix and mingle, have an easy going agenda, make some plans.
3] Plan a work party – put ideas into action, create a way for people to learn useful skills and find out how much fun it is to meet others while working on a useful project.
4] Plan a bike tour to visit eco friendly sites. This can be more than a garden tour. A bike tour is a lot of fun and not so much work. Its a good prospect for media coverage – boom – more info out there for green ideas. Visit on the ground Earth friendly actions people are already doing such as successful gardens, rain water catchment systems, passive solar design, reclaiming automobile space, coopertives of various kinds; eco friendly innovations at home, school or business; examples of neighbors collaborating with each other, living lightly, turning a shopping mall into an eco village, trading a freeway for a bike path/pedestrian promenade,,,,.
In Eugene, the summer of '09, the COS coordinated 9 bike tours all over town. Typically, 50 to 70 people participate per tour. Its a great sight! The tours are syncronized and all are promoted together because we have a neighborhood committee with members from 12 neighborhood organizations doing the planning. A story about last year's bike tours was front page of the city region section with a schedule for all four bike tours.
Find the sites to visit and ask people if they would like to be on a tour to talk about what they are doing. Its really fun and a lot of people come away from the tour with plans to make changes where they live. This would be great to do the day after Jan's presentation because Jan would love to go on the tour as well.
Those are a few ideas for hosting, related outreach and follow up for GTLC. If you have addtional ideas, great, I'd like to know what they are and how they work out. Please let me know. Be creative. This should all be fun!
