During the next eighty five minutes, you will hear and see a great deal of information. My request is please complete the entire presentation. Scorching our economic system may be tough for some to hear but its vital for what follows. Most of the presentation describes actions and positive choices we can make in our own lives and communities for a more peaceful and healthy world.
Global Trends refer to climate change, resource depletion, social dis equity, the environment in steep decline and destabilizing global relations. Related to those trends is a deep concern about our economy, way of life and culture. The choices are, what can we do to make best use of the opportunities we have, for positive outcomes, in a rapidly changing world.
The goal of Global Trends – Local Choices is to encourage people to take an active part in this bold and timely adventure - to find creative, uplifting and peaceful ways to take care of human needs that planet Earth can sustain over the long term.
This presentation will challenge. It is both practical and philosophical. Some people might call the ideas described here as radical. A different perspective would observe what is really radical is climate change, massive species extinction, trillions spent on weapons of destruction and remarkable disparities between rich and poor. Ideals and values to safeguard the well being of people and planet, to cooperate with our neighbors near and far, compassion and help for those less fortunate, to live in peace --- is not radical at all, its actually quite sensible.
 
Global Trends – Local Choices will not dwell on climate change and resource depletion. Those immense and compelling challenges are symptoms of deeper issues that have much to do with our economic system and the culture it has created. That is where I prefer to focus. We will take a closer look shortly. Actions and strategies described in this presentation to meet these challenges will lead to diverse benefits that will mitigate the trends, address the economic system and benefit civic culture – all at the same time.
Useful Points of Departure
Here are several points of departure that will help you make the most of GTLC. Please keep them in mind.
First - The resource and energy intensive way of life most of us are familiar with does not fit into what Planet Earth can accommodate. Lifestyle changes are called for to use far less energy and resources and to be far more thoughtful about what we do use.
Second - Approaches to address trends and challenges called for in mainstream discussions are far from adequate. In fact, they are often in the way. Corollary – what is needed by a growth dependent economy and what is convenient for humans expecting to live in affluence as we know it, will not likely work for planet earth.
Third - Solutions to these trends and challenges are not technical. The challenges to finding solutions are institutional, political, economic, cultural and individual.
Fourth - The great majority of the tools, skills and models needed to make thoughtful choices for a peaceful and healthy world already exist. Making those choices will improve our quality of life in many ways.
And finally - Positive human potential is perhaps our greatest renewable resource - there is near unlimited opportunity to make good use of these changing times.
