Santa Rosa to Bend

Yalupa Co Housing. A mile from the Methodist Church. The open space to the right was supposed to be a freeway. That is no longer the plan. Citizens and government officials are meeting to discuss what can be done with the open space a couple hundreds yards wide and couple of miles long. A great new park with bike paths, community gardens, reconstructed habitat? Imagine if other auto places were reclaimed and had the same opportunity.

Interior courtyard at Yalupa. Grace and I were told every space available was being replanted for fruit and vegetables, tomatoe at left. Containers, a few raised beds fit in here and there where there was space.

Behind the buildings at Yalupa. A couple raised beds to the right add to the food production. A reasonable guess, car infrastructure takes up 40% of the footprint of Yalupa Co Housing space. Apparantly, automobiles are more important than food.

Back yard of Richard Heinberg's house in Santa Rosa. Lots of food forest. Solar, several 100 gallons rain water catchment, edible landscaping all over.

Richard's place. Most of this is edible food forest landscaping.

Richard's place from the street. It was the only house I saw anywhere near that looked like this.

South Oregon Coast. I left Santa Rosa after Richard's place. Really eager to go home. I stayed the night near Crescent City and drove the rest of the way to Eugene the next morning along the coast.

Port Orford looking south to Humbug Mountain. Its a really beautiful view. I have never seen the air so clear along the coast. One time i surfed at this spot with a much larger over head swell.

Over the hill to Bend for a presentation. It was cloudy in Eugene. Slight touch of drizzle at Sahalie Falls. At Santiam Pass, 4800 feet, the clouds broke.

A couple miles down slope, the sky cleared. Black Butte in almost full sun with eastern Oregon stretching off into the distance.

Clouds evaporate. View from between Sisters and Bend, west to the Cascade crest. This is a classic rain shadow phenomena. Prevailing wind over a barrier, wet on one side, dry on the other. What a spectacle!

And the trip was a big adventure. A lot learned in multiple ways.

Thanks to those who helped make it possible and the many hard working people i met who are making a difference.
